Avoid This! [member edit]

For all 10MW Plus members

Morning all. A little later than planned, and just FYI the public version of this video will be delayed due to technical difficulties (ie the sponsor couldnt find their backside with both hands). Anyway, in this one I want to explain what’s going on with my hands, and to  encourage you to get help when you think you may need it, rather than doing what I did and waiting until I knew I really needed help, because by then it might be a bit too late.

This is video number 599, my last video of 2024, so I’d also like to take the opportunity to wish everyone well for the coming festivities, and to share a quick roundup of my highlights of the year. Stay safe, take care, and I’ll see you towards the end of January 2025 for video number 600!

Peter

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Peter,

FYI, when I was 13 I fractured the finger on my right-hand in a fight with my brother! At school, my teachers were not in the slightest bit sympathetic to my predicament and actually forced me to write with my left-hand. Although it was almost unintelligible script to begin with, within a few weeks I was able to write quite fast and, by the time my finger healed, I was more than capable of writing decent script with either hand.

It's not a direct comparison but, believe me, it is possible to learn to do some things left-handed - including using a toothbrush ;-)

Cheers Alan! I see a lot of left-handed-ness in my near future, though u fortunately I'm getting some twinges in that one too now! Hey ho. All the very best to you too! 👍

Merry Christmas Peter, thank you for your content over the last 12 months, appreciate all the hard work you put into your videos and the community.

Just to echo others comments - hope your thumb gets better soon with plenty of rest. It’s surprising what we take for granted with our bodies until things don’t work like they used to.

Look forward to your content in the new year 🎄 🍾

Thanks Richard, and you too! Easy to take things for granted when it’s working, but like plumbing and flushing toilets you sure do miss them when they’re not! 👍

All the best for Christmas Peter and do continue to look after yourself. It’s all too easy to get carried away with the DIY and not listen to our bodies telling us we’re not as young as we used to be…

I had a steroid injection in my wrist to try to resolve the constant pins and needles I’m getting. It worked for about 3 weeks and then wore off which matched what I had read about beforehand. The doctors don’t like you having more than 2 or 3 injections a year either so it’s only a temporary relief. Physio, surgery or lump-it are the only realistic options in my experience. Hopefully it won’t come to that for you

Thanks Geoffrey, and sorry to hear about your issues. Yes, I’ll be trying all the options, see what might be best, but physio and rest seem to be the favourites. 👍

Happy Christmas and look after the tendon(s)!

Immobilise 24/7 works a lot quicker than taking the brace off when not convenient.

D'Q's tenosynovitis was defined as an industrial injury in the 1930s. The symptom (tendonitis) is 'curable' but the cause (damage to the synovium) is permanent.

Be careful when over using your other hand if you get a problem in both at the same time things can get a bit messy - and if that aint enough to get you to rest nothing will😮.

Aspirin is a pretty good anti inflammatory unlike paracetamol (acetaminophen for the USA ).

Please don't minimise teno' even to yourself. It is a right bugger and pisses me off more than most of my other…

Thanks Jonathan! Yes, I'm already starting to get twinges in my left hand as well 😕 Hey ho; you can't get back what you've lost, just look after what you have, and all that. All best for now, Peter
