Can DIY Dominos ever make sense?[member edit]

For all 10MW Plus members

A usual, I've left the sponsor read in this otherwise ad-free member video in case it was of interest to members; it's in its own chapter so it's easy to skip if it's not for you.

The first 500 people to use my link in the description will receive a one month free trial of Skillshare! Get started today!” https://skl.sh/petermillard02251

In this one I’m trying to figure out if making your own DIY Dominos makes any sense, helped along a little with the new UJK Loose Tenon bit from Axminster tools. I honestly can't square this in my head, but let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Thanks so much to Dylan Barfield  @dylanbarfieldfurniture  for the video clips, see Dyan's video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53jMhd1eNNQ and check out Dylan's channel here - https://www.youtube.com/@dylanbarfieldfurniture

I purchased the products used, I’m not affiliated or associated with Axminster Tools or Find Buy Tools, links are provided as a courtesy.

Impressive that Find Buy Tools has positive comments from around the globe on those domino makers: USA, GB, Zambia, etc.

Wonder where they are truly located.

I’ve noticed that a 5x30 Festool Domino tenon is actually 28-29mm in length to avoid problems.

We should do the same shortfall for the custom DIY tenons.

FBT are in China, though they seem to work quite hard at being discrete about it; couldn’t say where the buyers are truly located, of course. 😬 All standard sized tenons are a little short of the specified length to avoid bottoming out, and yes I’d always recommend it - nothing worse than having two halves of a join not quite meeting up because the tenon is a fraction too long, or there’s a bit of debris in the mortise! 👍

Peter,

Like you I have made some wider/long dominos in the past. All I did in the way of rounding over was to use a 6mm rounding over bit in a small router. It was enough to let out any excess glue and air. Since I already had the bit - no extra cost.

My trusty Elu MOF96 was set up in its mini router table - so it was easy enough and quicker than doing it by hand …

Dont think so Gav - I'm certainly not hearing it. All the voice audio was recorded in a single session, mono recording so the same audio delivered to the left & right ears. 🤷‍♂️ 👍
