My £80 mini-me MFT [member edit]

For all 10MW Plus members

OK, last MFT* / bench video for a little while I promise, but I couldn’t resist giving this £80 MFT-style portable bench a try; I mean, how bad could it be??

*MultiFunction Table, after Festool’s MFT/1080 and MFT/3

I have a shopify store I’m just trying to sort out the postage for mft tops due to the size and wait I think I’m

Going to have to limit the size of them that I can post also how did you find trend to deal with were they a bit of a nightmare all one way ?

I mentioned this is the midweek, but I'm just very pleased we now have options in workbenches despite the flaws in each of them.

Also, 80£/$100 is a GREAT price for just the aluminum frame and legs alone. Bolt on a t-track (another $20 maybe) on the front/back, and you have the makings of a very respectable portable mft!

I really may just buy one of the other versions... the Mrs is going to be very displeased...

I try to arrange for tool deliveries on days the Mrs has an office day. It does occasionally misfire so then I get a text message to complain that a bloke was at the door with a large box as she was in the middle of a meeting.

Question — does it matter much that the MDF is flush with the aluminum sides?

Most folks will have just a single cut-line (or Peter’s replacement strip).

Would it harm to cut 3mm into the aluminum sides?

Does that get into the fixings and fasteners?

Naturally, the saw blade will be fine for cutting into a small segment of aluminum.

You and I and most folks here will probably make a nice neat cut in the same place, time and time again. But a lot of folks dont work that way and just cut all over the surface, so for them they need to be aware, and again, if I didnt mention it I'd get a bunch of comments about it. 🤷‍♂️

Apologies if the tone is a bit matter-of-fact. It’s all meant to be food for thought and discussion.  😀

Just watched the mid week video on the Vevor / Excel.

Will get around to watching this one.

Perhaps it’s all answered in the public video and associated comments!

Four thoughts:

Why fret over the 3” spacing? It’s a NBD thing. Rethink the paradigm — a gentle nudge.

Knowing the holes do wear out, Festool made the holes on 96mm centers for clamping — not for alignment. The after-market industry is the one advocating dual-use of the holes.

If the Vevor hole layout is consistent and square — that is a good thing.

What tools and accessories absolutely need 96mm hole spacing?

Thanks Niraj. Yes, there's more to come on this, generally (a "Why 96mm Centres" video will be coming along) and I'm certainly not fretting about 96mm centres - it would just be remiss of me not to mention it. You're absolutely right, few accessories need 96mm centres - benchdogs MFT dogs in a rail square is one obvious one, or their rail hinge and rail hinge template. But I look at it the other way around; what exactly does putting the holes on 76mm centres improve? Absolutely nothing as far as I can see - it just causes problems with - more expensive - accessories you may already have or be considering.

Same with the 100mm centres with the Sautershop…

This looks a great option for occasional use, for instance when I want to work outside on the patio as opposed to in my workshop. Amazing capacity for such a cheap bench. How many Peter Millards would it support?

That's exactly the situation I think it will be perfect for Lukas. And I'll confess I haven't checked my weight for a while, but it appears to be about 6.4 SMU*, clothed. 👍
